The Advantages of Different Styles of Riot Helmets for Certain Operations

Summer is breakout season for protests and riots, which means it’s more important than ever for police and security professionals to have the right gear on hand for protecting their most important asset: your head. For years, EDI’s riot helmets have served the needs of police and security professionals around the world. This guide will help you choose which of EDI’s riot helmets is best for your operation.

A Range of Styles

To keep police and security professionals safe during protests and riots, in addition to our ballistic helmets line, EDI manufactures 5 different styles of riot helmets. This range of options enables EDI’s riot helmet line to meet the needs of police and security professionals facing various climates and different types of riot situations.

Customization Options

To further meets your needs, as the manufacturer, EDI offers you the ability to tailor your riot helmet to your team’s unique specifications. We will customize the color to your specification, and offer our helmets in either glossy or matte finishes. Our team of tactical specialists will also work with your team to customize to your specification the helmet’s visor style, harness style, and interior padding configuration. We can even add an optional inscription, screenprinting your force’s name or an optional logo on your helmet.

Certain police forces require customization and special colors / logos on the outside of their riot helmets, such as the special number decals and yellow lines shown here.

Our Riot Helmet Styles

The PROTEC-X Riot Helmet: Traditional and Utilitarian

The PROTEC-X is the traditional riot helmet. It is optimal for standard riot operations where the user’s head must be fully covered. The PROTEC-X’s full coverage offers comprehensive protection from projectiles and other threats the officer may face during a riot situation. The PROTEC-X’s visor offers full coverage for the eyes, and a tight seal around the top of the visor helps prevent liquids and gas from seeping in between the visor and the helmet shell.

EDI’s PROTEC-X Riot Helmet, available in 54 colors. Pictured here in matte finish; also available in glossy.

Because of its full-coverage protection, EDI’s PROTEC-X Riot Helmet is popular for city operations where high-density protests may be expected. The PROTEC-X riot helmet is also popular with rural units, as the PROTEC-X’s comprehensive protection and utilitarian features make it ideal as a one-size-fits-all solution for unexpected protests.

For those in hot climates, a popular option is to customize EDI’s PROTEC-X Riot Helmet by tinting the visor. The tinted visors thus offer sun protection in the field, in addition to insulating the wearer from tear gas and projectiles.

EDI’s Riot Gear Set: Our TURBO-X Riot Suit paired with our PROTEC-X Riot Helmet.

Because of its traditionalism and utilitarianism, the PROTEC-X has been one of EDI’s most popular helmets for both domestic and export sales for 5 years running. Wearers often use it in conjunction with the PROTEC-X Riot Shield and the PROTEC-X Riot Suit

The TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet: For Stronger Face Protection

This model offers ideal protection for riot situations when the officer may expect protestors to throw heavy objects at its users. The TERMINATOR-X riot helmet offers stronger face protection than the PROTEC-X Riot Helmet. With the TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet, a heavy-duty face cage layered over the outside of the visor. This face cage shields the visor against impacts that might otherwise cause the visor to shatter. The result is that the face cage further insulates the wearer from blunt force trauma, attacks, and collisions with heavy-duty projectiles.

EDI’s TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet, featuring a face cage that enhances the visor’s durability and provides enhanced protection for the wearer’s face.

The TERMINATOR-X’s face cage protection likewise makes it ideal during prisoner transport. Specifically, our clients have found EDI’s TERMINATOR-X face cage protection especially useful during cell extraction activities. For this reason, EDI’s TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet has found a home in hundreds of prisons around the world.

A common customization requested is to add anti-fog treatment to the inside of the visor. This helps prevent the TERMINATOR-X’s visor from fogging up during operations. EDI is happy to work with our clients to meet this specification upon request.

The Bubble Riot Helmet: For Enhanced Gas and Smoke Protection

Our latest Riot Helmet style, EDI’s Bubble Riot Helmet is popular with police and security professionals who are exposed frequently to tear gas and other smoke elements. What makes the Bubble Riot Helmet unique is the “bubble” shape of its visor. Because the visor protrudes outwardly, this makes it easy to layer a gas mask underneath.

Side view of the EDI Mini Bubble Riot Helmet. The “Bubble” shape of the visors makes it easy and comfortable for the user to wear a gas mask beneath the visor.

Because of the ability to easily layer a gas mask under the visor, EDI’s Bubble Riot Helmet is most popular in urban environment riot situations where tear gas is more frequently deployed.

To help customize the Bubble Helmet further to your needs, EDI offers two different options for the thickness of the Bubble Helmet’s visor. This enables your team to select the thickness of your visor based on the unique threat environment you anticipate in the field. If you wish to seek enhanced protection against heavy projectiles thrown at officers, the thicker visor will best serve your needs. If your primary concern is protecting officers from tear gas and other liquids, the thinner visor will meet your needs.

The Mini Bubble helmet, pictured above, is less bulky than the traditional Bubble style, making it optimal for tactical operations.

Additionally, EDI’s Bubble Helmet comes in two different styles. EDI’s Bubble Mini Riot Helmet is less bulky than the traditional Bubble style, making it perfect for tactical operations or when officers need to move very quickly.

Don’t let it go to your head: The best ballistic helmet for your team

Your head is the most important part of your body, which is why EDI manufactures three ballistic helmet models to offer police and military the bullet-proof protection they need. Plus as the manufacturer, EDI is able to offer helmet customizations using a variety of colors, retention systems and padding configurations. Through these customization options, we’ve been able to help police and military forces in over 40 countries around the world procure ballistic helmets that meet their exact specifications.

We’re here to help you select which helmet is right for you! Read on for EDI’s guide to each helmet’s fit and recommend usage scenarios.

The PASGT Model

Pronounced “PAS-GIT”, the PASGT helmet is the traditional ballistic helmet model that has been protecting men and women in serving forces around the world for decades. This helmet has a small “visor” above the head, and offers good ear protection. Popular among military members, the EDI’s PASGT model helmet protects up to level III-A threats. Tried and true, there’s good reason the PASGT model has been EDI’s “classic” ballistic helmet for years.

A soldier wearing a PASGT style helmet with tactical goggles.

The MICH Model

With a newer design than the PASGT model, the MICH helmet does away with the small “visor” about the head. The MICH model is compatible with side rails, a gas mask, and a front NVG mount, making it ready for tactical operations. And since the helmet dispenses with the ear protection flaps, users can easily use headphones with it.

A soldier preparing for tactical operations wearing a MICH style helmet with gas mask.

For these reasons, users tend to prefer the MICH model over the PASGT model for tactical operations. When close team cooperation and communication is required, the MICH model’s compatibility with side rails and headphones is indispensable. Hence the MICH model is especially popular with police, and with tactical military units around the world seeking to mount night-vision goggles or radios to their helmets via the siderails.

The FAST High-Cut Model

EDI’s latest ballistic helmet model, the FAST offers the user unrivaled mobility. The FAST ballistic helmet includes side rails and front NVG mount for tactical operations. Its high cut makes it particularly easy to integrate devices with these features, without compromising a user’s comfort or mobility.

Police using PASGT-style helmets with a face visor accessory for facial protection.

Unlike the PASGT, the FAST helmet’s shape does not include ear protection flaps. This makes it possible for the user to easily use headphones to stay in communication with their team. Like all of our helmets, the FAST resists up to level III-A threats, and comes in a variety of sizes and colors.

Of course if after reading this, you’d like to consult with an EDI tactical specialist to further narrow down which helmet is best for you, EDI is at your service! Contact a team member today to schedule your free consultation on which ballistic helmet is right for you.

How to Choose the Right Riot Suit for Your Threat Environment

At EDI, we offer a range of products to product security professionals and police and military forces in the field. Our goal is to offer cutting-edge personal protection tailored to your threat environment. Around the world, our Riot Suits are one of our best-selling product lines. EDI currently offers two riot suits. The riot suit that will work best for you depends on the threats you’ll be facing in the field.

The PROTEC-X High Tactical Riot Suit

EDI designed our PROTEC-X suit to support police officers during major public disturbances and riots. With the PROTEC-X High Tactical Riot Suit, we offer clients a riot suit that significantly improves flexibility and maneuverability. To that end, our riot suit is 34% lighter in weight than traditional riot suits. The approximate weight for the entire suit is 6kg, offering comprehensive protection without weighing you down. For our female customers, female riot suits are available as well. Created with anti-flame fabric (PYROTEX), the PROTEC-X High Tactical Riot Suit protects the wearer against Molotov Cocktails. Additionally, its hard plates protect the wearer’s shoulders, upper body, forearms, lower back, groin and thighs from projectiles thrown by a crowd. A specialized cuff protects the wearer’s neck. To further enhance the wearer’s level of neck protection, pair the EDI PROTEC-X suit with EDI’s specialized Riot Helmet. In order to protect the wearer from stab threats, the PROTEC-X High Tactical Riot Suit offers NIJ II stab protection. For forces requiring ballistic protection, NIJ III-A ballistic plates may be inserted within the front and back chest plate for maximum protection. We’ve got your shins and knees covered as well! Specialized protection plates and knee guards provide flexibility of movement. That way you’ll experience comfort and peace of mind while kneeling or maneuvering to avoid attacks.

The TURBO-X High Tactical Riot Suit

Developed in 2017, our goal with the TURBO-X High Tactical Riot Suit is to provide a one-size-fits-all solution to departments looking to stock up on riot suits. As with the PROTEC-X High Tactical Riot Suit, the TURBO-X provides comprehensive protection for the wearer’s shoulders, front and back upper body, forearms, lower back, groin and thighs. EDI’s specialized shin and knee guards are also included, providing mobility, comfort, and protection. The difference between our TURBO-X and the PROTEC-X suits is that the TURBO-X is one-size-fits-all. Additionally, the TURBO-X is not made of flame-resistant fabric. For departments that may confront protests, yet do not face a Molotov Cocktail threat, the TURBO-X’s construction can thus offer cost savings. Furthermore, since the TURBO-X suit is one-size-fits-all, it provides a simple solution for departments looking to scale up their protest containment capacity.

Compatibilities with Other EDI Products

A riot suit only offers protection from neck to ankle. Protecting a user’s head must be taken into account as well, in addition to self-defense options. To this end, EDI recommends that its riot suits be paired with our Riot Helmets, Ballistic Helmets, Police Shields, and Police Batons.

Ballistic T-Shirts – Innovative Lightweight and Comfortable Ballistic Protection

As the global threat landscape evolves, more than ever, Police, Security and Military professionals require concealable ballistics protection. Based on our clients’ feedback in over 45 countries around the world, EDI has developed a new line of ballistic t-shirts using innovative technology and advanced engineering. Our bullet-proof t-shirts protect serving officers while offering ballistic protection that is safer, lighter, and more comfortable than ever.

Full Front and Back Protection, and Partial Side Protection

When you’re looking for covert ballistic protection, a ballistic t-shirt provides full front and back protection. Ballistic t-shirts even upgrade on the level of protection offered by a traditional bullet-proof vest. Traditional bullet-proof vests only provide front and back coverage, yet a ballistic t-shirt provides partial side coverage in addition to full frontal and dorsal protection.

Lightweight Construction and Moisture-Wicking Fabric for a Comfortable Fit

From working closely with our clients, we know how important it is to customize your gear and have comfortable, lightweight protection. This is particularly important in hot climates or operations requiring plainclothes dress. EDI’s ballistic t-shirts are thin and lightweight, making them easy to wear in plainclothes situations. Wear them as an outer layer, or as an undershirt.

When it comes to working under the hot sun, our advanced moisture-wicking technology keeps you cool. Even better, the cut and style of the ballistic t-shirt provide easy ventilation. The stretchy fabric conforms to your body, providing a comfortable, stylish fit while preserving your agility.

Comprehensive Ballistic Protection

For comprehensive ballistic protection, pair our ballistic t-shirts with our ballistic helmet line. Our FAST, PAGST, and MICH Ballistic Helmets each of offer armor level NIJ III-A protection, providing 360° security for the serving men and women who protect us.

EDI’s ballistic line keeps police, military and security professionals safe in the field. Our new ballistic t-shirts keep serving officers safe, while conserving their agility and keeping them comfortable under the hot sun.

For all of your ballistic protection needs, from t-shirts to shields to helmets to hard armor plates and ballistic vests, choose EDI, your ISO 9001 certified American body armor manufacturer.

International Public Safety Association Conference

International Public Safety Association – Washington DC – November 2018

capture_20181230204910

Hello Everyone!

Recently we attended the IPSA or International Public Safety Association annual conference in Washington DC last month and it was an amazing experience!

Most attendees were first responders (Police, EMT, Firefighters) and there were many seminars conducted that outlined best practices for traumatic scenarios.

Here is some quick info on the IPSA Group:

  • Established in July 2014 in the State of Arizona
  • Non-profit public safety association – represents all public safety verticals:
    • law enforcement
    • Fire service
    • EMS
    • Public works
    • Public health
    • Hospitals
    • Security
    • Emergency management
  • The Mission is to break down the cultural barriers and foster the relationships between EMS, fire, law enforcement, telecommunicators, allied emergency responders, and the communities they serve.

This event brought people from all over the globe to include visitors from the USA, Europe, Asia, and South America. It was wonderful to hear about the different tools and tactics used in the industry around the world.

Our table was getting a lot of attention as we debuted our Ballistic T-Shirt to the attendees. Everyone was very excited to see this product because it is strong enough to stop a .44 mag bullet but also very thin and lightweight, so much so that no one can tell you are wearing body armor.

Take a look at this product below:

Protest and Riots to Increase Worldwide: How to Prepare

Protest and Riots to Increase Worldwide

EDI-USA protesting

How to Prepare

We are living in very exciting times right now, rapid technological innovation and artificial intelligence development in every field imaginable that will help us humans perform fewer menial tasks.

But are we ready for the workforce to be permanently displaced by automation?

Many economists make the argument that we are spending too much time wondering if it will happen and not enough time planning on what we will do when it does, as they say this sweeping takeover is inevitable.

With so much change happening all at once along with other political motivating factors, the next 20 years seems to have set the table for significant social unrest.

Will you and your team be ready to handle the uptick in public demonstrations and unrest?

Well…. We are here today to give you and your team some pointers on how to prepare for a future that may have more interaction with the public than you are accustomed to already

How to Properly Train and Prepare for Increased Protest Activity:

  • Train Often:

You can’t be properly prepared for something you have never practiced. You and your team need to set yearly trainings to build and maintain a knowledge base that will keep them and protesters safe during these altercations.

    • A properly trained unit will be able to achieve the following:
      • Manage peaceful crowds effectively
      • Recognize the difference between an unlawful assembly and a constitutionally protected gathering of people
      • Apply defensible arrest tactics when facing active resistance or passive resistance and be prepared to recognize the difference
      • Demonstrate defensible subject control and wooden baton techniques
      • Make tactically sound arrests, which are prosecutable
      • Perform classic crowd control formations, cross bow movements, and operate as an effective field force under stress
      • Have some grenadiers available trained in the deployment of chemical munitions and impact munitions
      • Recognize the type of crowd they are facing
      • Identify dangerous behaviors in a crowd
      • Implement their role in the department’s plan
      • Be a presence, not just present, when working a crowd
    • Equipment:

Buying the right gear is costly no doubt BUT if quality products are purchased and maintained properly, they can help save lives and money for your unit. Officers should all possess at the very least a helmet, a wooden baton and ring, and a fit-tested gas mask and carrier. The best protection that can be had would be fully outfitted riot suites, they cover workers from head to toe in full protection. Take a look at them here.

    • Plan:

      Pre-event planning should consist of:

      • Delegating responsibility and authority to commanders on scene
      • A callout protocol for additional personnel
      • A pre-set detour plan for anticipated hot spots
      • A communication plan
      • A staging plan for vehicles
      • Additional vehicle and radio acquisition plan
      • Protective response plan for gun stores and drug stores
      • Field force activation protocol
      • Street clearance plan
      • Mutual aid agreements in place
    • Update:

After initial crowd control training, agency members can receive training update as a 3- to 4-hour block at in-services on a yearly basis. Updates should be scheduled just prior to known events. Team arrest, rescue and movement skills can be re-enforced. After re-enforcing old skills, specific tactics for the upcoming event can be practiced.

    • Repeat:

After all the officers in your agency have been trained, train all new hires. Agency-wide skills can be totally lost over time through attrition. New officers should be trained and equipped to ensure department-wide capability.

How Goggles & Gas Masks Can Save Your Team

How Goggles & Gas Masks Can Save Your Team

There are certain items that a department may decide to do without.

Tactical googles and gas masks are great examples of these precautionary tools that are often deemed not entirely necessary.

Today I am here to convince you why these items are necessary and can save your team from unnecessary health damage and even possible death.

Lets start with the googles. A soldier / officer is completely useless without his vision so why wouldn’t you spend the couple of extra dollars to ensure his effectiveness?

Lets look at some facts about soldiers vision in active scenarios!

  • About 15% of injuries from battlefield trauma are to the eyes.
  • In just the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq, Military personnel suffered more than 200,000 eye-related injuries.
  • About 75% of military personnel suffering traumatic brain injury also have eyesight problems.
  • Approximately 70% of our total sensory awareness comes from sight, making vision the most critical of the five senses, especially in combat conditions.

As you can see from the above taking care of your eyes is a vital duty that every team captain should consider because a mission’s success relies on the health and functionality of your teams most important assets – your men!

If you are worried that ballistic googles may be too militant and your team may not need such a high level of protection, you should absolutely consider ballistic glasses as opposed to the googles as they are lighter weight and more versatile. Look at what EDI-USA has to offer below.

  • Reliable and Secure. Manufactured with durable polycarbonate (PC) and TPU lenses.
  • All of EDI’s ballistic goggles include anti-wind, anti-scratch, and anti-fog technology.
  • Lenses are manufactured in clear, yellow, grey and black.
  • The majority of EDI’s goggles comply with ANSI fragmentation standards, and are produced with durable elastic adjustable straps.
  • Goggles can be sold in kits to include goggle case, cleaning cloth, and extra lenses as required.

EDI-USA Googles

Next item that we must talk about today is Gas Masks!

North America seems to be having a heavy drug crisis that has only gotten worse in the last decade. Many officers are experiencing sudden and accidental overdoses when they enter homes of drug dealers because of a strong substance called fentanyl. With one breath an officer can easily overdose and put his body in a total state of shock, as these instances are happening more often police and military departments are realizing the need for gas masks for their personnel. Lets not forget how important gas masks are in active combat situations, if soldiers breath without proper protection they could be dead in minutes. Look at the gas masks EDI-USA offers below. We customize to your needs and will be willing to help you specialize a mask that is best suited for your teams’ exact needs, please feel free to contact us for any questions!

  • EDI manufactures standard gas mask filters and MIL-SPEC complaint gas mask filters.
  • All filters include active carbon 270g with a screw top, and last between 30 – 40 minutes.
  • Protect against tear gas, toxic smoke and other TIM’s.
  • Gas masks are compatible with the majority of EDI’s riot helmets.

EDI-USA Gask Mask

Now that you understand the risks that police and military encounter I’m sure you have decided it’s time to consider properly outfitting the team with quality protective gear for their eyes and lungs. Which Bullet Proof Vest Is Right for You?

Which Bullet Proof Vest Is Right for You?

What to Look for When Shopping for Bullet Proof Vests

This is the most important question you need to ask when shopping for a bullet proof vest, because it can literally be a life or death decision.

If the vest you are wearing does not protect you from the threats you are going to face then you will have wasted your money, and you will be putting yourself at risk.

Equally you should not choose a piece of body armor that offers unnecessary protection, as it may be heavier and more restrictive than a vest with less protection.

Before purchasing body armor you should always research the area in which you will be working, the history of attacks that have taken place there previously etc. This will help you to decide which type of bullet proof vest is right for you, and which level of protection will suit your needs.

Selecting the Correct Bulletproof Vest for You and Your Team

Step 1: Identify if you will need a Covert or Overt bulletproof vest

Covert Bullet Proof Vests: Covert armor is used for individuals that want to be protected but do not want to be seen wearing body armor. Because covert bullet and stab proof vests can remain hidden beneath clothing, they can help to keep members of covert security teams both hidden and protected as they still cover a number of NIJ protection levels. This is the preferred option for individuals involved in professional and covert security duties.

Overt Bullet Proof Vest: Overt armor is often heavier and bulkier in appearance than covert armor. It is designed for higher protection levels and has to be worn over clothing due to its size and weight. Overt bullet and stab proof vests protect whoever wears them up to the maximum NIJ protection levels. It also provides protection from heavy gunfire and large blades/spikes.

Step 2: Identify the right level of ballistics protection needed

All ballistic vests are tested to different levels and are created to assist in different uses and purposes. A vest that is certified to protect against lower caliber bullet threats may offer no protection against higher caliber weapons. Many of our vests can be equipped with additional armored plates that will increase a vest’s protection level.

Level III-A: This is the principal level of ballistic protection here at EDI-USA. The III-A offers comfort and versatility with protection levels from a .22mm up to a 44 Magnum. Most of the level III-A vests available here at EDI-USA can be outfitted with ballistics plates to increase the level of ballistics protection for the wearer if required.

Level III: The level III offers higher levels of protection and covers ballistic sizes from .22mm up until .30-06. It is a touch bulkier and made of a harder material than the IIIA. The level III bullet proof vest can be outfitted with additional ballistic plates that will increase the overall ballistic protection level for the wearer as well.

Level IV Ballistic Plates: These hard armored plates can be added to existing vests to increase the protection level to withstand fierce attacks ranging from carbine weapons to armor piercing bullets.

Anti Stabbing Protection: Many assume that if a piece of body armor can stop a bullet, it can stop a knife. This is however not the case, stab proof vests are different to bullet proof vests in both design and fabric. If you need a bulletproof vest that also has anti-stabbing capabilities, at EDI-USA we have the unique ability to make customized dual purpose vests that can withstand bullets and sharp object attacks.

Step 3: Identify the additional personalized needs for your team

EDI-USA has several different lines of bullet proof vests and they all are made to serve different and distinct duties. See the below variations to understand the variables.

Tactical Style: tactical ballistic vest with comprehensive front, back, neck, shoulder, upper arm, side, and groin protection. This vest is a Police favorite for its full coverage and unique quick release system.
Integrated Neck Protection: This vest is integrated with extensive neck protection making it perfect for situations with sporadic bullet fire or danger of knife attacks.
Fully Adjustable: This vest sports the capability to fully adjust so it can be useful both under and over clothing giving the most appropriate fit.
Float-able Bullet Proof Vest: This is a favorite of the navy as this vest is able to keep the user afloat for 24 hours while retaining its anti-ballistic abilities.
Hard Plate Carrier: This is a rugged vest designed to carry both standard level III and IV ballistics plates for added protection.

These are just a few of the many options that we manufacture. Please see our full catalog to experience the full product line.

Are Non-Lethal Weapons Effective?

Are Non-Lethal Weapons Actually Effective?

Yes! Non-lethal weapons are very effective and a great option for any team that may want to mitigate the risk of accidental deadly force, or increase their department’s tactical skills to include non-lethal response strategies.

In the late 80’s the world’s military and police forces created the Non-Lethality Policy Review Group in an effort to develop weapons that were more life-conserving, environmentally friendly, and fiscally responsible than weapons available at that time. Since then there have been huge advancements in non-lethal technology.

There are actually several countries worldwide that enforce their police members solely with non-lethal weapons:

  • United Kingdom
  • Norway
  • Ireland
  • Iceland
  • New Zealand

Not to our surprise, a 2009 study has shown that monthly incidence of injury declines significantly, by 25% to 62%, after adoption of non-lethal devices. This is a huge incentive for your force and community to support the use of the most popular non-lethal devices.

Most Popular Non-Lethal Weapons

  • Side Handle Baton: A classic non-lethal tool made popular by the police as far back as the 1800’s. The side handle baton is regarded greatly for its effective defensive qualities. The side-handle component prevents the baton from rolling far away if inadvertently dropped, helps to quickly block attacker’s blows, and has the ability to deliver a powerful hit when used with the power stroke technique. See video here.
  • Electric Baton: A modern variation designed to administer an electric shock in order to incapacitate the target. It consists of an insulated handle and guard, and a rigid shaft usually a foot or more in length for delivering a shock. Many designs function like an elongated stun gun or a cattle prod, requiring the tip to be held against the target and then manually triggering a shock by a switch in the handle. Some more sophisticated designs carry a charge along the shaft’s entire surface, administering a shock on contact. This later design is especially useful in preventing the officer from having his weapon grabbed and taken away by an assailant. See video here.
  • Extendible Baton: expandable batons may have a solid tip at the outer end of the innermost shaft; the purpose of the solid tip is to maximize the power of a strike when the baton is used as an impact weapon. Expandable batons are made in both straight and side-handle configurations, but are considerably more common in the straight configuration. The idea being that should violence suddenly escalate the baton can be easily deployed but can be stowed neatly away so as not to affect movement due to its mounting point on the officer’s clothing. See video here.
  • Taser & Stun Gun: The Taser is an electroshock weapon developed in the 1970s. Using compressed nitrogen charges, it fires two hook-like electrodes that send an electrical current into a person, causing involuntary muscle spasms. The weapon can also be used without propelling electrodes, producing instead an electrical arc that can be thrust into a person. Tasers are designed to be used instead of firearms, greatly reducing deaths in the process; fewer injuries to police officers have been achieved with its use as well. See video here.
  • Net Gun: Inspired by Spiderman comics and movies, this shotgun-like device fires a Kevlar net, which, traveling at about 65 mph, wraps up the suspect or criminal in a spider-like fashion, until police can handcuff him or her. See video here.
  • Pepper Spray: causes temporary blindness and difficulty breathing, the effects of which lasting from 30 to 60 minutes. Some pepper spray formulas are combined with tear gas, to cause profuse tearing and disorientation. Some formulas have a dye included in the spray to mark the attacker for possible identification by law enforcement at a later time. See video here.

Don’t Lose Your Head – Choosing the Best Helmet For You

Don’t Lose Your Head – Choosing the Best Helmet For You

Digging into the History of Helmet Technology

Combat helmets have come a long way since their inception.

1900’s – 1970’s

In the early 1900’s the helmet was just a steel protector that could guard against bumps, shrapnel and debris.

These helmets were better than not having any protection at all, but were also very heavy, uncomfortable, and unable to stop actual life-threatening dangers.

See the two most popular models here from World War 1:

Brodie – “Effectively an overturned metal dish weighing about 1.3 pounds” read more.

M1 – “A slight brim on its front to keep precipitation off a soldier’s face and a slightly lipped rim all the way around” read more.

Things changed rapidly in 1965 when Dupont chemist Stephanie Kwolek invented Kevlar!

Kevlar – a synthetic ballistic fiber bonded with a synthetic polymer resin is often considered stronger than steel and has the ability to stop most bullets and shrapnel from penetration.

With this grand discovery the next helmet was born.

1970’s – 2000’s

The Personal Armor System for Ground Troops otherwise known as PASGT was the next helmet to hit the market.

This design allowed for coverage of the ears and the back of the skull all the way to the nape of the neck. The PASGT’s protective qualities, due to the Kevlar exterior, proved a vast protective improvement over the M1. While still not perfect at stopping close-range bullets and shrapnel and shell fragments, the helmet’s provision of safety was recognized as a huge leap forward.

See Photo: PAGST

With time, more updates were identified and the army once again made enhancements to give soldiers a helmet with more configuration for accessories such as ear communication headsets.

Level III-A ballistics armoring, available in 4 sizes and 8 colors in EDI-USA’s Catalog.

2000’s – Current

The Modular Integrated Communications Helmet, otherwise known as MICH was born.

See Photo: MICH

This is a military favorite and staple for active members.

The MICH offered reduced weight, improved fit, and more effective protection against handgun rounds. Complies with level III-A ballistics armoring, interior trauma pads, side rails for attachments, and available in 4 sizes and 8 colors in EDI-USA’s Catalog.

Then…

Special Operations realized they needed something better suited for their line of duty so they too went back to research and development to start building their perfect helmet.

The Future Assault Shell Technology, otherwise known as FAST was then born.

Extremely lightweight, level III-A ballistics armoring, side rails, front shroud mount, ear space for audio communications, available in 3 sizes and 8 colors in EDI-USA’s Catalog.

Designed for special operations forces, features an integrated mount for night vision, built-in retention lanyards, mounting platform for accessories.

Mount ability of task lights, hearing protection, communication accessories, face protection, oxygen systems, video cameras, and numerous other devices.

Here is am interesting video if the history of military helmets, they even do practice shots on them at the 7 minute mark!

Keeping the Guards Safe – Prison Guard Protection

Working as a Prison Guard is a Constant Challenge!

It requires that you keep a calm and collected attitude while working in dangerous and often times completely random circumstances.

Even with proper training and equipment a prison guard can very easily be attacked and receive life threatening wounds.

On average, 11 work-related fatalities of guards are reported per year. Making the job of prison guard one of the top ten most dangerous jobs.

Look at more statistics here

Let’s Take a Look Inside the Average Day in the Life of a Prison Guard.

A Day in the Life of a Prison Guard

  • Wake up around 4:45 AM and commute into work – (prisons are often long commutes away from the general public)
  • Arrive 20 minutes early for the 6 AM shift
  • Connect with the Ward Officer to brief the day
  • Start the morning walk from cell to cell to check on the inmates status
    • Inmates will often use this time as an opportunity to try and attack the guards by throwing objects or even bodily fluids
    • Depending on the day guards may have to do cell searches and even body cavity searches to look out for contraband
  • Let inmates out for breakfast, lunch, and yard time – while keeping a keen eye on all inmates for illicit behavior and substances
  • Stroll the hallways and cells monitoring behavior in shifts
  • Log your shift information into the computer system, making note of any prisoner infractions
  • Lock prison down if prisoners are threatening to riot
  • Monitor video surveillance of various areas of the prison
  • Shift change with next crew of guards – 2 PM
  • Let prisoners out for dinner – monitor all activity
  • Lock down prison for the night
  • Walk halls and cells all night to ensure compliance
  • Shift change for the morning – 6 AM

Check out a video: here and here

As you can see, there are often hundreds, if not thousands of potentially dangerous prisoners that an officer is expected to be in very close contact with throughout their day.

Oftentimes officers are not armed with a gun for protection.

Because an officer doesn’t have a gun it is crucial that they feel safe and confident in their environment through other means, and the best way to do this is through using body armor.

Let’s Look At Some of the Most Popular Equipment Used to Keep Prison Guards Safe.

Best Prison Guard Equipment to Keep You Safe

  • Handcuffs / Leg cuffs: made of the most resistant levels of steel and nickel composite for supreme strength and anti-rust capabilities. These cuffs made for hands, feet, and full combination are a mandatory tool for prison guards.
  • Bulletproof / Stab Proof Vest: Level III-A technology can help to stop bullets and prison stabbing attempts. Having a protective vest of this caliber is often a psychological tool as much as a practical one.
  • Gas Masks: Manufactured with 100% silicone and ABS these masks protect against tear gas, toxic smoke, and other TIM’s. These keep the guards unaffected from riot control techniques that are necessary to maintain a prison under control.
PROTEC-X COMBAT DANGEROUS THREATS COMFORTABLY

The PROTEC-X anti-riot suit was developed by EDI in 2016 to help police officers combat some of the most dangerous threats of unrest in the United States. As of 2017, EDI began exporting this anti-riot claim to Latin America in order to support police officers in their crowd control operations. Since EDI began exporting this anti-riot suit in 2017, it is now present in more than six (6) countries in Latin America and continues to help police officers in their operations.

Why do police officers like to wear the EDI PROTEC-X anti-riot suit?

  • Flame retardant fabric: The suit is designed with fireproof fabric to protect the user from fire threats.
  • This includes Molotov cocktails when they are thrown at police officers wearing the suit.

How do users feel while wearing the PROTEC-X suit?

  • Lightweight design: the suit is extremely lightweight and allows users to move with ease, while protecting the user.
  • The suit includes a durable hard protection around the entire body, including hard stab-resistant plates in the front and back.
  • Poorly made suits often do not balance well and do not cover the body well. With the EDI PROTEC-X suit, users will wear the suit instead of looking like the suit is “wearing” the user!

What is the end result of protecting yourself with an EDI anti-riot suit?

  • Stab-resistant NIJ II 0115 compliant plates: two (2) hard anti-stab plates to protect the user at the front and back of the suit.
  • The plates have been tested at the HP White Laboratory in the USA, and they have been tested to resist to threats up to NIJ II 0115.

It is very important that users know what to wear to stay safe in such unstable conditions. The right riot suit can make the difference between a successful mission and a great uncertainty.

What is the Best Bullet Proof Vest for Your Job Type?

What is the Best Bullet Proof Vest for Your Job Type?

Bullet proof vests are always one of our most requested and talked about products.

With so much interest, we thought we would dedicate a blog post to give our best advice for choosing the most appropriate vest for your occupation. We’ll also answer the most commonly asked questions about bullet proof vests.

Let’s start with the FAQ’s:

Frequently Asked Questions About Bullet Proof Vests:

  • Q – When were bullet proof vests invented?
    • A – Kevlar the most common material used in bullet proof vests was invented in 1966 and the vests began production in the 70’s.
  • Q – What is the average lifespan of a bullet proof vest?
    • A – The average lifespan of a vest is a minimum of 5 years set by NIJ standards however the level of maintenance of the vest can extend or shorten the vest’s life span.
  • Q – Does moisture, sweat, and water affect a bullet proof vest?
    • A – YES! Unless your bullet proof vest is rated for moisture and water it is very import to avoid moisture as the vest may deteriorate earlier than anticipated.
  • Q – Where is the best place to store my bullet proof vest?
    • A – Keep your vest in a closet or flat place. The inserts in a bullet proof vest cannot be stretched or bent in any way over a long period of time. This will cause the bulletproof fibers to be pulled apart and thereby they will lose their durability and eventually be ineffective in stopping bullets. Place your vest in a closet or a flat place where it is out of the sun. Please be aware when you get home from work, that you don’t put your sweaty vest on the floor in the corner. The sweat can seep into the fibers and reduce durability.
  • Q – What happens if I gain or lose weight?
    • A – A vest should fit its owner like a glove, generally the rule is any change of 10% or more to your body weight will require you to be fitted with a new vest that in appropriate for your new body size.
  • Q – What level of protection should I get?
  • A – There are three major levels that most manufacturers offer. They are level II-A generally ~4 mm thick, level II generally ~5 mm thick, and level III-A generally ~7.5 – 8.5 mm thick. The style and NIJ level of the vests are entirely dependent upon the type of work you are doing with the vest and what possible dangers you may face in the line of duty. See below for an in-depth explanation on NIJ levels and recommendations.

Having answered all the most commonly asked questions about bullet proof vests, let’s explore which style of vest is considered the norm for each occupation that requires protection.

EDI-USA Bullet Proof Vest

What is the Best Type of Bullet Proof Vest for My Job?

Below are examples of the professions that usually require bullet proof vests in their daily interactions.

Police Officers – Police officers need adequate protection that is also very mobile. The industry standard for most US police is level III-A, this gives strong protection while still allowing the wearer to make rapid movements.

Swat / Tactical Teams – These individuals are often entering extremely dangerous environments or situations and require protection from heavier artillery and unexpected shrapnel. Most tactical groups use III-A vests paired with level 3 armored plates. It is also common for SWAT and tactical members to have additional neck and groin protection.

Military – This will depend on the branch and mission. For members of the Navy it will be necessary that the bullet proof vests be floatable in addition to bullet-resistant. Most military members will be wearing III-A and above, along with armored plates for combative missions.

Private Security – This will be up to the user’s preference, but it is common for private security guards to wear level II or III-A vests to ensure a suitable level of protection without inhibiting the wearers’ maneuverability and concealability.

Civilian Workers – All the jobs mentioned below generally require individuals to wear a level II or III-A vests which will ensure an adequate level of protection without inhibiting the wearer’s maneuverability and concealability.

  • Shop Owners and Workers
  • Paramedics
  • Park Rangers
  • Bank Employees

Why Your Team Needs Ballistic Shields

Why Your Team Needs Ballistic Shields

Shields have been around since earths earliest civilizations and are still widely used today. If your team doesn’t have proper ballistic or riot shields yet, now is a great time to consider getting one. The technology and materials used in current ballistic shields are light years beyond what the Zulu warriors were using in the 1800s but the shields core purpose, to stop fatal objects from hitting you, has remained largely unchanged.

Take a quick look at the history of shield progression below:

Protective Shields Throughout History

  • PrehistoryYetholm Shields of Bronze age made of copper alloy. (1200-800 BC)

Yetholm Shields of Bronze age

  • Ancient History – Roman Legionaries carried large scutas made of leather covered wood. (343-304 BC)

Roman Scutas

  • Post-classical History – European heater shield made of lightweight wood overlaid with leather. (1101 to 1200)

Heater shield

  • Modern History Law Enforcement shields, made from metal, polymers, and Kevlar designed to be bullet proof / fireproof. (1925 – present)
    • Light weight level IIIA shields that stop hand guns and submachine guns.
    • Heavy Level III and IV shields that stop rifle rounds.

Police_officer_in_riot_gear

Ballistic technology has increased tremendously in recent years to finally offer something that is truly lightweight but stronger than previous shield models.

Now that we have seen how protective shields have progressed throughout history, now let’s take a look at the reasons why a Military or Police force would absolutely want to equip their men with ballistic shields in 2018 and beyond.

Why Now Is The Time To Invest In Proper Ballistic Shields

  • Resistant to bullets, .44 mag, 9mm, .357sig, and V50
  • Resistant to fire, molotov cocktail, and small explosives
  • Ballistic shields can be customized with a “shooters cut” in order to allow the user to insert his or her weapon on the side of the shield without being fully exposed.
  • Shield sizes can be customized to fit the user’s specific operation. EDI recently undertook a project to produce 15 customized “mini-ballistic shields” for users who need to implement tactical operations in confined indoor areas.
  • “Righty” and “Lefty” friendly!
  • Lighter and stronger than ever!
  • Political violence, protest, and crime incidents are up by 17% since 2016
  • 2016 alone saw an increase of 53% of officers killed in the line of duty in the United States

Equipping your team with the proper gear is an insurance policy, better to have and not need, then need and be without. At the end of the day we want make sure our Police, Security, and Military members get back home safely and without bodily injury which is why we think now is as good of time as ever to get you team some much needed Ballistic shields.

Bullet Proof Helmets – A Mandatory Tool for Today

Ballistics Helmets – A Mandatory Tool for Today

Modern society is advancing in all areas faster, and with more technology than ever before. As great as the progress has been for tools, consumer items, and transportation, it must be noted that this rapidly changing landscape does come with advanced risks as well. Just the other day a landmark ruling against Cody Wilson decided that it is legally OK for him to publish his free 3D printable plans to print a pistol. This means that anyone in the world could download his blueprints and have this weapon printed. This also means that these new guns are untraceable as they have no serial numbers.

As society moves faster and faster it becomes even more necessary that the Police, Security, and Military also move forward in advancing their tools of the trade. If it seems like there has been a rise in protests worldwide, you’re not mistaken “ we’ve had more mass movements in this decade than in any decade since 1900.” As Police will continue to do their job in rapidly changing landscape there is one item they shouldn’t leave for last and that is their safety.

Now is the time to upgrade your helmets to cutting edge bullet proof helmets that are safer, lighter, and more comfortable than ever before.

Look at the below styles to see what you and your team would be best equipped with.

What to Wear While Working Protests and Riots

What to Wear to Keep Your Team Safe in Protests and Riots

Protests and Riots are especially dangerous working conditions as tension can escalate quickly. As a large group assembles and emotions flare, a mob mentality may form, and people may act in a way collectively that they never would as individuals. Due to this volatile level of danger, it is crucial that you and your team are dressed properly for the occasion.

Let’s take a moment to understand how current riot control tactics were born.

The Development of Riot Control Techniques

  • The first squad trained in modern techniques of riot control was formed in 1925 in colonial Shanghai, China as a response to the mismanaged riot of the May Thirtieth Movement.
  • New policing methods, including combat pistol shooting, hand to hand combat skills, and knife fight training, were pioneered as a response to a staggering rise in armed crime in the 1920s due to a breakdown in law and order in China and the growth of organized crime and the opium trade.
  • A myriad of riot control techniques were developed which gave birth to Shanghai’s “Reserve Unit” – the first modern SWAT team.
  • The skills developed in Shanghai have been adopted and adapted by both international police forces and clandestine warfare units. These methods were then taught around the world, from the US to Singapore.

As your team prepares for upcoming protests or riots, it is very important they know what to wear to stay safe in such unstable conditions.

The proper gear can make the difference between a successful mission and grave uncertainty. The protest and riot gear that is available now is far superior to anything that was created when the initial crowd control techniques were still being developed.

Modern riot gear covers all vulnerable parts of the body to ensure that the wearer has complete protection while remaining fully functional. As the riot gear often covers the majority of the human body it is commonly referred to as a suit. It is highly recommended that you and your team wear anti-riot suits during large protest and riots.

Let’s take a look at the protection that has been designed specifically for protest and riot situations.
