Protect the Protectors: EDI-USA Has the Gear You Need to Keep Retail Security Staff Safe

With the holiday gift-buying season upon us, brick-and-mortar retailers are bound to see an upswing in the number of shoppers, along with more physical altercations involving customers and shoplifters. Keep your security staff safe with EDI-USA’s wide range of protective gear! Check out our array of anti-stab and bullet-resistant vests, and contact us to determine what products are right for your business’s needs.

According to recent industry reports, violent shoplifting events have been on the rise for years. According to D&D Daily, the year 2022 set an all-time record for violent retail crime, which rose more than one-third since 2019. That record was quickly broken the following year: according the National Retail Foundation (NRF)’s 2023 Report, retailers saw a 35% average rise in violent shoplifting events just since 2022! This trend shows every sign of continuing: the Council on Criminal Justice reported that in the first half of 2024, shoplifting in the U.S. rose by 24%, despite a downward trend in other crimes nationwide.

Culprits aren’t just armed with their fists; many carry weapons ranging from pepper spray to knives and handguns. Keep your security and loss-prevention personnel safe from pepper spray attacks with EDI-USA’s visors and face masks. Safeguard your staff from knife attacks with our stab-resistant vests, or custom-order EDI-USA® bullet-resistant vests with additional Level 1 or 2 stab resistance built-in.

Retail security and loss-prevention officers face unpredictable but ever-escalating rates of workplace violence, whether intervening to protect customers during armed altercations and robberies or apprehending potentially armed shoplifters.

Retailer Macy’s alone has seen a spate of armed attacks by shoplifters on security guards in the last twelve months, as far apart as Yakima, Queens, Wilmington, Boston, Philadelphia, and Sacramento. Such attacks have resulted in several hospitalizations and at least one fatality.

Violent retail crime is by no means limited to big-box stores and national chains. Last year, 13% of small business owners reported experiencing daily retail theft, with 45% of retailers reporting reduced hours or location closures in high-crime areas.

The rise of smash-and-grab style ORC, as well as shootings in malls and retail parking lots, has led some retailers to install crime-deterrent smoke bomb and pepper-spray systems of their own. If you’re considering such measures, make sure your staff’s eyes and airways are protected from “friendly fire” with EDI-USA respirators and gas masks.

Don’t leave your security staff vulnerable! Guards and loss-prevention officers are often the first line of defense against theft, as well serious injury, before police can arrive. Contact us today to find out more about how EDI-USA’s gear can help ensure your employees—and your bottom line—are protected.

Not Just For Cops: The Importance of Body Armor for Firefighters and Medical First Responders

Being any kind of first responder (FR) is dangerous work. Law enforcement officers (LEOs) may typically be the first line when dealing with armed assailants, but they’re not the only FRs at risk of serious injury in the line of duty; fire and EMS responders are too.

Whether you ride in an ambulance or a fire engine, EDI-USA has custom-designed gear to keep you safe from gun, knife, and other attacks. Firefighters can protect their heads and torsos with EDI-USA MICH ballistic helmets and custom-designed FIRE ballistic vests and plate carriers, all in bright red.

We also carry custom-designed ballistic vests and plate carriers for EMTs and paramedics in blue or high-vis yellow. Depending on visibility and head-protection needs, EDI-USA carries a wide array of ballistic helmets with custom colors and suspension systems available.

But why is this level of protective gear even necessary for Fire and Medical FRs?

It’s common knowledge that Fire and EMS are typically dispatched to active-shooter situations to provide emergency medical care. Yet how, where, and when they administer life-saving care has been changing in recent years.

Historically, medical FRs have worked in “cold zones”, outside of active danger areas. But it’s increasingly common for them to suit up in body armor and ballistic helmets and work in semi-cleared “warm zones” under second-line police coverage.

While operating in “warm zones” can provide earlier access to victims—potentially making the difference between life and death—it also puts medical FRs at greater risk of being caught in the crossfire. Training in tactical EMS may be crucial, but so is having the right protective gear.

Even when not dealing with active shooter situations, EMS personnel and FF-EMTs can be at risk of stabbing, shooting, or “struck by” assault when responding to seemingly innocuous calls.

Luckily, EDI-USA also carries lighter-weight stab-resistant vests, and most of our ballistic vests and armor plate inserts can also be custom manufactured with added anti-stab (NIJ levels 1 or 2) and/or anti-spike (level 1 to 3) protection upon request.

Concerned about the added bulk (or the look) of an outer ballistic vest or carrier?

EDI-USA also carries lightweight concealable inner ballistic vests that can be worn comfortably and discretely underneath uniforms.

How much risk are EMS providers really at in the line of duty?

Recent studies have found that EMS personnel are significantly—perhaps 14 times— more likely to be assaulted by patients than firefighters during rescue operations. In a study from 2018, a majority (65%) of EMS personnel reported being assaulted by patients, with 1 in 10 of such assaults involving a weapon.

According to the US Fire Administration, almost three-fourths of fire departments’ work nowadays involves providing emergency medical care rather than putting out blazes. Though fighting fires is incredibly dangerous work, providing emergency medical care is not without risks either.

In recent years, EMTs and FF-EMTs have been shot and even killed in the line of duty, be it in Upstate New York, Minnesota, North Carolina, or Tucson, AZ. In some cases, EMTs making routine wellness checks have been mistaken for home intruders and shot.

Emergency medical personnel across the US have also been stabbed by assailants or patients—frequently in the confines of an ambulance—in cities like Philadelphia, Manhattan, Boston, St. Louis, and Grand Rapids, but also in rural municipalities.

Having the right body and head gear can also protect lessen the impact of more common blunt attacks from agitated or erratic patients, and even provide limited impact protection during vehicle collisions

*First responders providing life-saving emergency care deserve to feel safe too.*

The Importance of Police Riot Gear for Protection During Operations

In recent years, the role of law enforcement officers has become very important, especially during public demonstrations and riots. While police use many different types of protective equipment during their work, one aspect remains clear: the necessity of protective riot gear for police officers. Riot gear, including helmets, shields, and body armor, is essential for protecting officers and ensuring public safety. In this article, we will explore the importance of riot gear for police, examining its role in safeguarding officers, maintaining order, and facilitating peaceful resolutions.

1. Protection Against Physical Harm

During riots and violent protests, police officers are often targeted with projectiles such as rocks, bottles, fluids, and other dangerous objects. Riot gear provides crucial protection against these threats. Riot helmets, face shields, riot shields, and body armor can prevent serious injuries and even save lives. By equipping officers with protective riot gear, law enforcement agencies can reduce the risk of harm and ensure that officers can perform their duties safely.

Key Points:

  • Riot Helmets and Riot Face Shields: Protect against head injuries and facial trauma, as well as helping prevent liquids thrown at officers from entering their face.
  • Riot Suits: Suits help protect vital organs from impact and penetration during operations. They cover the front part of the officer’s vital organs, and can also be paired with ballistic body armor.
  • Riot Shields: Riot Shields offer a barrier against thrown objects and direct physical attacks. They can also be used in an interlocking form to form a riot barrier.
  • Gas Masks: Gas Masks also make up an important part of officer’s riot gear stock. They help protect against the use of tear gas & peppers spray, as well as other harmful substances that  offices may be exposed to during anti-riot operations.

2. Maintaining Public Order

Riot gear is not just about individual officer safety; it’s also about maintaining public order. When police are equipped with the necessary protective equipment, such as riot helmets, riot face shields (visors), riot suits, riot shields, and gas masks, they are better positioned to control crowds and prevent chaos. Riot gear enables officers to form protective lines, advance safely into volatile situations, and disperse crowds without resorting to excessive force. This presence can act as a deterrent, reducing the likelihood of violence escalating.

Key Points:

  • Formation Tactics: Allow for safe and effective crowd control.
  • Deterrence Effect: Reduces the chances of violence by demonstrating preparedness.
  • Non-Lethal Options: Enables the use of non-lethal methods to manage crowds.

3. Facilitating Peaceful Resolutions

A well-equipped police force can help de-escalate potentially violent situations. When officers have the necessary riot gear, they can approach conflict zones with more confidence and control. This preparedness can foster a sense of order and authority, encouraging peaceful compliance from protestors and rioters. Moreover, it allows police to focus on de-escalation techniques, communication, and negotiation, rather than solely on self-defense.

Key Points:

  • Confidence and Control: Enables officers to manage situations calmly.
  • De-escalation: Encourages peaceful compliance through authority and preparedness.
  • Communication: Focus on dialogue and negotiation over force.

In conclusion, the importance of riot gear for police cannot be overstated. It is a critical component in ensuring the safety of officers, maintaining public order, and facilitating peaceful resolutions during riots and violent protests. By providing police with the necessary protective equipment, we can support their mission to protect and serve while fostering a safer and more orderly society.

The Vital Importance of Body Armor for Firefighters

Firefighting is an inherently dangerous profession. Every day, firefighters put their lives on the line to protect our communities from the devastating effects of fires. While most people associate firefighting with battling blazes, these brave individuals face a myriad of other hazards. This is why it is crucial for firefighters to purchase and wear body armor. In this blog post, we will delve into the reasons why body armor is essential for firefighters, explore the specific risks they face, and highlight how body armor can save lives.

The Expanding Role of Firefighters

Modern firefighters are not only tasked with extinguishing fires; their roles have expanded to include responding to a wide range of emergencies. From hazardous material spills and natural disasters to terrorist attacks and active shooter situations, firefighters are increasingly finding themselves in dangerous scenarios that go beyond the traditional fireground.

Why Body Armor is Crucial for Firefighters

  1. Protection from Ballistic Threats In active shooter situations, firefighters are often among the first responders on the scene. These scenarios are unpredictable and can quickly turn violent. Wearing body armor such as bullet-resistant vests design for fire fighters provides crucial protection against firearms, increasing the chances of survival and enabling firefighters to perform their duties without compromising their safety. In addition, head protection such as ballistic helmets, are also an important part for a firefighter’s body armor stock.
  2. Defense Against Stabbing and Slashing Firefighters frequently encounter individuals in distress, including those who may be violent or mentally unstable. In such instances, there is a risk of being attacked with sharp objects. Body armor designed to protect against stab and slash injuries can be life-saving in these situations, whether ballistic vests with integrated stab protection, or vests that provide only stab protection.
  3. Enhanced Safety in Hazardous Environments Firefighters work in environments where debris, shrapnel, and falling objects are common hazards. Body armor offers an additional layer of protection against blunt force trauma, reducing the risk of serious injury from these threats. Ballistic helmets can help reduce brain trauma for shrapnel incidents.
  4. Chemical and Biological Protection Responding to hazardous material incidents and potential terrorist attacks involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) agents requires specialized protective gear. Gas masks are designed to provide limited protection against these threats, helping firefighters can safely operate in contaminated environments. In some situations, gas masks are required by firefighters to help protect them from tear gas or pepper spray that may be used by law enforcement.

Real-Life Scenarios Highlighting the Need for Body Armor

  1. Active Shooter Incidents In recent years, there has been an alarming increase in active shooter incidents. Firefighters, often acting as first responders, are at significant risk during these events. The tragic shooting at a municipal building in Virginia Beach in 2019 underscored the importance of body armor. Firefighters on the scene faced the threat of gunfire while attempting to rescue victims and secure the area. Having body armor can make a critical difference in such high-risk situations.
  2. Violent Individuals and Domestic Incidents Firefighters are regularly called to assist in domestic violence incidents and other situations involving violent individuals. In 2017, a firefighter in Long Beach, California, was fatally stabbed while responding to a fire at a home. This heartbreaking event highlights the potential dangers firefighters face and the need for protective gear to mitigate these risks.
  3. HazMat Responses Firefighters often respond to hazardous material spills and chemical leaks. In these scenarios, the risk of exposure to dangerous substances is high. Body armor with chemical-resistant properties can provide an added layer of protection, allowing firefighters to operate more safely in these environments.

Choosing the Right Body Armor for Firefighters

When selecting body armor, firefighters must consider several factors to ensure they are adequately protected:

  1. Threat Level The bullet-resistant vests or ballistic helmets should be rated to protect against the specific threats firefighters are likely to encounter. This includes ballistic threats, stabbing, slashing, and blunt force trauma, and different rounds such as handguns or rifles.
  2. Comfort and Mobility Firefighting is physically demanding, requiring a full range of motion. Bullet resistant vests for firefighters, and tactical ballistic helmets, must be comfortable and allow for unrestricted movement to ensure that firefighters can perform their duties effectively.
  3. Durability Firefighters operate in harsh conditions, so the body armor must be durable and able to withstand the rigors of the job. This includes resistance to heat, flames, and exposure to hazardous substances.
  4. Compatibility with Other Gear Body armor should be compatible with other protective gear, such as turnout gear, helmets, and SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus). This ensures that firefighters can wear all necessary equipment without compromising their safety or performance.

Conclusion: Investing in the Safety of Our Firefighters

The role of firefighters has evolved, and so have the dangers they face. The traditional fireground hazards are now accompanied by new and unpredictable threats, making it more important than ever to ensure that our firefighters are adequately protected. Body armor is a critical piece of equipment that can save lives and allow firefighters to perform their duties with greater confidence and security.

Investing in high-quality body armor is an investment in the safety and well-being of our firefighters. By recognizing the importance of this protective gear and making it a standard part of their equipment, we can better protect these everyday heroes who risk their lives to protect us.

ExecDefense USA manufactured several types of riot helmets for different applications.

Our PROTEC-X Riot Helmet is one of our most popular riot helmets for anti-riot operations. Paired with our TURBO-X Riot Suit, this helmet is strong, secure, and tested to NIJ 0104.02 anti-impact standards. It includes a strong neck guard to help protect against neck threats, an the thick visor also includes a fluid guard to help protect against the entrance of liquids or bodily fluids that may be thrown at an officer wearing the riot helmet.

Riot helmets not only provide physical protection but also exert a psychological impact on both law enforcement personnel and the public. When officers wear riot helmets, it sends a clear visual message that they are prepared to maintain order and respond to potential threats. This visible deterrent effect can dissuade individuals from engaging in violent or disruptive behavior, helping to de-escalate tense situations before they spiral out of control. By projecting an image of authority and readiness, riot helmets contribute to a sense of security and discourage the escalation of violence.

One of ExecDefense helmets that is popular for high-tactical riot operations is our TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet. This helmet is equipped with a strong steel face cage to help reduce the impact of blunt objects to the face, and it also includes a strong fluid guard gasket on the top of the visor. The neck protector is removable (for easy cleaning) and the visor is standardly treated with an anti-fog treatment. This helmet is popular to be paired with the ExecDefense PROTEC-X gas mask (front face style) along with EDI’s RUB-X Riot Shield.

Public trust and confidence in law enforcement are paramount for effective community policing. Riot helmets play a role in preserving this trust by ensuring that officers can effectively perform their duties while minimizing personal harm. When the public witnesses police officers equipped with protective gear, it conveys a sense of professionalism and commitment to public safety. By prioritizing officer safety, riot helmets underscore the principle that law enforcement agencies value the well-being of their personnel, further enhancing public trust and cooperation.

Although riot helmets are an essential part to an officer’s gear bag, it’s important that riot helmets are used in conjunction with other protective equipment to help ensure officer safety. Riot suits, riot shields, and batons, are just the basics. If there are more intense crowd control operations, then gas masks, handcuffs, and other tools may be required.

Information to Help be Prepared Against Active Shooters in Schools and Universities

This blog aims to provide information for faculty, staff, students, and visitors of schools and university campuses on how to help be better prepared for an active shooter or an act of terror in a school or university setting.

An active shooter is a person or persons who appear to be actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people and in most cases are bearing a firearm. The number of mass shootings has increased significantly in the last two decades, Texas alone had eight mass shootings in the past 13 years. Many school districts across the nation either don’t have an active shooting plan or produced insufficient ones.

Active shooter situations are dynamic and evolve rapidly. They demand an immediate response by the community along with the immediate deployment of public safety to prevent/stop the shooting and limit harm to the community. At EDI-USA we are fully committed to the protection of our children and our communities in our beloved nation at all costs!

Strategies:

Schools and universities should stay protected and mitigate the risks against active shooters or acts of terror via different adequate strategies. These strategies should include training mechanisms, communication plans and mandatory drills for the faculty, staff, and students to be prepared to deal with the situation with the appropriate protocols. Also ensuring the schools and universities are well equipped with protective gear and having security professionals on the ground can significantly increase the chances of survival. And finally, by securing or limiting the buildings entrances and exits.

EDI offers state of the art products that could help mitigate the risks against active shooters and protect your children and loved ones in these difficult situations. From bullet proof helmets that are light weight and come in different sizes and a variety of colors, bullet resistant vests, bullet resistant panels/backpack inserts, and ballistic shields, to gas masks in case of acts of terror. We pride ourselves at assisting communities and police forces across the United States and internationally with our amazing and trusted range of products.

EDI works closely with end users in schools and universities to customize items based on their specific requirements and needs. From campus police departments to school resource officers, EDI-USA remains a resource for security professionals in schools and universities to rely on. Whether this is writing custom wording on the fronts of ballistic shields, or inscribing customized logos on bulletproof helmets, EDI always takes the extra step to communicate with customers to make sure they are overly satisfied with our products.

Bulletproof Helmets Inner Padding and Mitigating Brain Trauma

Staying protected in tactical situations is very important for you and your team, choosing the best protective gear that would ensure that, is a daunting task, that requires a lot of research and understanding of the capabilities of such equipment, the materials they are made of and what gear to use at which situation. Keeping your head and brain protected from injury would take the highest priority and is critical to function and survivability, and something that is constantly being overlooked is the padding of ballistic helmets which can significantly reduce the trauma to your brain after being shot at or from shrapnel and explosives. In this article we will try and explain the best ways to choose the best options for you and your team to stay protected and to ensure your safety during and after tactical situations.

There has been a great deal of innovation that has gone into the development, research and testing of protective gear materials, design, engineering, construction, and manufacturing of bulletproof helmets in recent history, after the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. NIJ testing mainly gives you an idea of what to expect of specific bulletproof helmets and how they will function against specific rounds or threats, for example a High-Cut (III-A) Tactical Bulletproof Helmet would protect you against or up to level III-A rounds, however the NIJ rating doesn’t specify anything about padding – or in that case extra-enhanced interior padding – and how it will decrease your chances of brain trauma or internal injuries if shot at by a bullet, unlike other ballistic helmets offered by other bulletproof helmets providers available on the market.

Research has shown that the padding of a bulletproof helmet can significantly reduce the chances of traumatic brain injury (TBI) from being shot at. At EDI we went to great lengths to design the best bulletproof helmets on the market that would ensure you and your teammates protection and safety when situations get tough. Not only did we use the best materials to make our helmets exteriors, but we also used the best materials for the interior padding to enhance your comfort, safety and protection and mitigate traumatic brain injury (TBI). Our great range of ballistic helmets will ensure your protection during and after tactical situations.

Starting with our top of the line the High-Cut (III-A) Tactical Bulletproof Helmet, unlike other bulletproof helmet providers, our High-Cut Bulletproof Helmet is equipped with extra-enhanced interior padding that significantly helps reduce brain trauma or internal injuries if shot at by a bullet. The extra-enhanced interior padding system includes seven (7) high-density memory foam pads that allow users to comfortably wear the helmet. Unlike other ballistic helmets which only include a couple of interior padding, the seven (7) pads are comfortable, lightweight, and can also be removed for cleaning or replacement. In addition, users can remove some, or all, of the padding in case they need extra space around their head to accommodate cold-weather head gear, or head-mounted communication devices. Our enhanced padding is a huge advantage and will significantly increase your chances of survival and injury if shot – it is hard to find other helmets at our price point that have such a great and high-quality interior padding system.

Our MICH (III-A) Bulletproof Helmet and our MICH (ACH) HELMET (III-A) – WITH SIDE RAILS AND FRONT MOUNT are equipped with durable pads (7 pads in total) along with a strong head harness with rubber chin up. The trauma pads on the inside are very, very comfortable. Unlike other bulletproof helmets, our bulletproof helmets are equipped with extra-enhanced interior padding that significantly helps reduce brain trauma or internal injuries if shot at by a bullet. This is a huge advantage and will significantly increase your chances of survival and injury if shot.

Finally, our PASGT (III-A) Bulletproof Helmet is equipped with a durable head harness as well as a cushioned interior and headband for maximum comfort during many types of situations requiring a bulletproof and tactical helmet. Unlike other bulletproof helmets, our bulletproof helmets are equipped with extra-enhanced interior padding that significantly helps reduce brain trauma or internal injuries if shot at by a bullet. This is a huge advantage and will significantly increase your chances of survival and injury if shot.

How Bulletproof Backpack Inserts Can Keep Your Family Safe

All parents want to protect their children, and with school shootings and active shooter situations at their highest in history, it’s important to empower your children to stay protected. Bulletproof backpack inserts have recently received a VERY high level of demand, and can help save your child or teen’s life in an active shooter situation.

How do these ballistic backpack inserts work? And how much protection can they provide to your child or teen during an active shooter situation? Keep reading to find out.

What Are Bulletproof Backpack Inserts And What Are They Made From?

Bulletproof backpacks inserts (also known as ballistic backpack inserts) are created from strong ballistic fibers woven together using crisscross patterns that form a durable but flexible weave or ballistic material. Multiple weaves are stacked on top of each other to form a single piece covered with an outer material that is resistant up to level III-A (ambient) ballistic threats. Similarly to bullet-resistant vests, the ballistic panels used in backpacks are produced with the same type of ballistic material. Currently, 95% of gun violence in America occurs from ammunition within level III-A ballistic threats.

When a bullet strikes the ballistic material within the backpack insert, the tough fibers are able to help stop the bullet in its tracks and prevent it from entering the body. Once a bullet-resistant backpack or insert has been shot, you should discard for it a new one.

How They Work

A child wearing a backpack with a ballistic insert will help protect protect their vital organs from attack from the rear. When children hear a gunshot, they should attempt an escape and get to safety. If the threat is in front of them, they should turn the backpack around to cover their head and chest. The bulletproof insert within the backpack may help save the child or teen’s life if they have nothing else to defend themselves with during an active shooter situation. Many furniture items like desks, chairs, and even doors are not bullet-resistant, so a ballistic backpack insert is one of the best lines of defense to help in emergency situations.

Ballistic backpack inserts are designed to fit into most standard-sized backpacks. The backpack inserts manufactured by EDI-USA are produced with a specialized “round cut” towards the top which ensures they can accommodate a zipper for ease of use, and the lightweight ballistics material ensures the child will barely notice the difference in extra weight.

Many tactical backpacks will include a compartment for bulletproof backpack panels but sliding the panel into the rear of the bag will also provide a sufficient level of protection. The most significant advantage of bulletproof panels for backpacks is that you are not as limited in your choice of backpacks.

Bulletproof material has an expiration date (typically five years), so bulletproof panels are an excellent option from a budget perspective, as you can replace the panel and continue to use your current backpack.

How Much Protection Do Bulletproof Backpacks Provide?

It’s important you choose a bullet-resistant backpack inserts that are tested in NIJ-approved laboratories to ensure you are using the highest quality. EDI-USA’s ballistic panels are tested to ballistic level III-A, ambient, which can help stop ammunition from .44 submachine guns, 9mm handguns, and .357sig. Ninety-five percent of gun violence is perpetrated with guns from this range, so you can help keep your child safer during most active shooter situations.

While bullet-resistant backpacks cannot make a child invincible, they can offer more protection than they would have otherwise, which can save their lives.

You can find out more about how affordable a little extra protection for your school child or teen can be by contacting us and ordering a ballistic backpack insert today.

Need more information or pricing? Please contact us and one of our body armor specialists will help you choose the best ballistic backpack insert for your child or teen.

All To Know About BALLISTIC SHIELDS!

Ballistic Shields – Are They Worth the Investment?

The concept of a shield has been a mainstay of warriors for hundreds of years. While modern projectile weapons are significantly more advanced than the spears and arrows of ancient times, the design and material of ballistic shields mean they are still a very effective tool for delivering a tactical advantage during active shooter situations.

Keep reading to learn more about bulletproof shields and how they protect and save lives.

What is a Ballistic Shield?

Ballistic shields or “bulletproof shields” provide mobile defensive cover for law enforcement or security forces during an active shooter incident or other dangerous situation. Their primary purpose is to stop bullets and other weaponized projectiles from penetrating the shield and injuring or killing the person using the shield.

Personal ballistic shields protect security personnel, SWAT teams, and law enforcement and help bring dangerous situations to a swift end without injury or loss of life. They are often used in drug house raids, high-risk search warrants, active shooter incidents (including in schools), and violent riots, just to name a few.

It is very common these days for police and other law enforcement officers to keep a shield in their patrol vehicle, in case a life-threatening situation comes up during their line of work.

Are Ballistic Shields Bulletproof?

A ballistic shield is a critical tool that can help keep their users alive when facing deadly force. As ballistic technology has advanced, many modifications have been added over the years to ensure their effectiveness.

Ballistic shields differ from clear plastic riot shields as they are usually black, rectangular, and include a built-in viewport. Like the rest of the shield, the ballistic viewport must offer ballistic protection, which is why they are manufactured with clear ballistic-level polycarbonate. Although nothing is guaranteed to be 100% bulletproof, ballistic shields will significantly help to reduce bodily injury or death if shot at while using one, similarly to using bullet-resistant vests or ballistic helmets.

The last 20 years have seen more than a few significant developments in ballistic shield technology, with different models having various pros and cons when used to counter specific threats. In addition, ballistic shields are a lot more lightweight and easier to handle than previous models over the past years.

Armor ratings of Bulletproof Shields:

Ballistic shields are rated according to the protection level they provide against different weapon grades.

  • Ballistic Armor Level III-A: protects against 9 mm handgun rounds, handgun rounds up to .44 magnum. and 12 gauge shotgun shells, including .357sig. They can be made from hard or soft armor. This is undoubtedly the most common level requested in most ballistic shields used by law enforcement. These shields are very lightweight and easy to carry or move around.

  • Ballistic Armor Level III: protects against rifle rounds up to 7.62 mm FMJ and 5.56mm, a mass of 147 grains, and a velocity of 2780 fts/s. These shields are very popular among law enforcement, school safety officers and other situations where rifles may be present. Most sizes of these shields can be moved easily (without the need of a trolley) and are being used more and more as active shooter situations tend to use more rifle ammunition than handgun ammunition.

  • Ballistic Armor Level IV: protects against armor-piercing (AP) rifle rounds such as 7.62 AP and .30. Although law enforcement does use this level of shield occasionally, it is extremely heavy and requires a trolley to be moved around. Therefore, most law enforcement professionals will tend to opt for a level IIIA or level III ballistic shield, given that AP rounds historically tend to not be used as much during active shooter situations.

The right ballistic shield for the situation can make all the difference in a deadly standoff. Lightweight shields are highly maneuverable. A heavy shield will increase the level of protection while sacrificing speed and movement. Heavier shields also come with a higher price tag than their lightweight counterparts.

Types of Ballistic Shields

A variety of ballistic shields are available to suit a range of different scenarios. A SWAT ballistic shield is a lightweight, multipurpose shield tested to armor level III-A. It’s lightweight and comes with a horizontal handlebar and body strap to ensure personnel maintain maneuverability with a high degree of protection.

The foldable and expandable tactical ballistic shield adapts to the situation with an optional lighting system and expanding wings that fan out to create a wider field of protection. When personnel enter confined spaces, the wings will quickly fold back in, making this shield one of the most versatile on the market.

But at the end of the day, the most popular type of ballistic shield is the standard rectangle cut ballistic shield, with ballistic viewport, available in levels III-A, III, or IV. This shield is lightweight, flexible, and reliable – it’s one of the most popular ballistic shield for law enforcement operations or active shooter situations.

Technological advancements have made ballistic shields lightweight and bulletproof against a wide variety of firearms. Whether you are looking for extra protection at home, or need to prepare your security force against deadly encounters, ballistic shields are an invaluable tool for bringing dangerous situations to a quick and decisive end.

Make Sure Your Canine Is Protected! Body Armor for Dogs.

Police dogs (K9’s) are brave companions that regularly and selflessly put themselves in harm’s way to protect their human officers and do what they cannot, such as use their sensitive noses to sniff out the trail of a fugitive or missing person, locate explosives, narcotics, and weapons, and take point to make sure an area is safe.

There are thousands of dollars’ worth of training invested in police dogs, but they are also caring and loyal animals that deserve our respect and protection. This is why we at ExecDefense believe a bulletproof vest for dogs is a worthwhile investment.

Keep reading to learn more about how body armor for dogs has a critical role in law enforcement, and can help save your K9 during dangerous and life-threatening situations.

Why is a Bulletproof Vest for Dogs Important?

These days, most departments around America are fortunate enough to have bullet-resistant vests, and ballistic helmets for their offices.  But unfortunately, many police dogs (K9’s) aren’t sufficiently protected with body armor.

There are many situations where police dogs will be in more danger than their human counterparts, as they are often sent in as scouts to ensure an area is safe. Unlike human officers, police dogs have only their teeth and claws as weapons. In situations with active shooters, officers have a lot of body armor, including bullet-resistant vests, ballistic helmets, ballistic shields. Why shouldn’t dogs be protected with K-9 body armor as well?

While they are capable fighters, they are no match for speeding bullets and are vulnerable to stabbing weapons. A lightweight dog protection vest can provide a high level of protection that will improve a trained police dog’s ability to bring down an attacker without suffering an injury.

Do Police Dogs Need a K9 Bulletproof Vest?

At ExecDefense, we believe that every police dog out in the field deserves to be protected like human officers. Police dogs often need to get up close and personal with an attacker to help make an area safe.

A trained dog won’t think twice about taking on an armed attacker with little regard for its own safety. This characteristic of police dogs sometimes makes them even more vulnerable to injury than human officers – all the reason why canine body armor is so important.

Police dogs perform valuable roles that often save lives and protect people from harm. A K9 bulletproof vest will more than pay for itself when you consider the amount of training that goes into creating a capable police dog that is an expert at its job. Not only is it the right thing to do, but body armor for dogs is a wise investment that will help more police dogs live to their retirement.

How Much Protection Does Body Armor for Dogs Provide?

In 2020, the lives of a staggering 22 canine officers were lost in the line of duty. A K-9 bulletproof vest can protect a dog from many harmful scenarios, including gunshots, explosives, stab wounds, kicks, punches, and blunt force trauma.

Even during riots or public disturbances, when officers are protected with riot gear – such riot helmets, riot suits, and riot shields – many support operations require canines, and it is important they can remain safe and protected with a strong resistant vest for dogs.

Selecting the Right Bulletproof Vest for A Dog

Canine (K9) bulletproof vests are available in a range of designs, materials, and levels of protection, such as NIJ level II and NIJ level III-A, but the vests must be lightweight, cool, and comfortable for the dog.

ExecDefense’s high-durability canine bullet-resistant vest is available in black, green, or tan, and comes in small, medium, or large. Customization is available to include velcro patches, permanent badges, or any other personalization required by you or your department / agency.

A huge advantage of ExecDefense’s bullet-resistant vest for dogs is how lightweight they are. Each vest must provide a high level of protection without impeding the dog’s agility. If a vest slows a dog down, it becomes vulnerable, making the vest a struggle for operations. This is why we use a very lightweight armoring technology in our K-9 vests to enables the dog’s full range of motion so they can do their job unhindered. This allows the canine to conduct its operations in a healthy, and effective way, with a minimal amount of exhaustion during working hours.

How to Buy A Bulletproof Vest for Your Canine (K-9) Dog?

EDI-USA offers some of the best Gas Masks on the market!

A gas mask is an air purifying respiratory protective equipment used to protect the wearer from inhaling airborne pollutants and toxic gases. The mask forms a sealed cover over the nose and mouth but may also covers the eyes and other vulnerable soft tissues of the face. A modern mask typically is constructed of an elastic polymer in various sizes. It is fitted with various adjustable straps which may be tightened to secure a good fit. Crucially, it is connected to a filter cartridge near the mouth either directly, or via a flexible hose.

Modern day Police and military forces use gas masks for a variety of reasons, mainly to protect themselves from airborne toxins and gases. For example, police forces here in the USA use gas mask for protection against drug particles during drug raids. Everything you need to know about EDI-USA Testing!

If you are in law enforcement, the military or private security knowing you’re well-protected, is crucial in tough situations. This article explains the safety standards and testing for bullet resistant helmets, bulletproof vests and ballistic shields at EDI-USA and what ballistic protection levels mean. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) sets standards for body armor, ballistic-resistant materials, and products.

Today’s bulletproof products are lighter than previous generations, which makes all the difference for ease of use and staying focused on your task. The National Institute of Justice sets industry benchmarks for ballistic protective materials and body armor, but how these rules apply to tactical gear can be confusing to some people.

The NIJ administers a program to test commercially available armor for compliance with the standards to determine whether the products will perform as expected. In addition to being tested for NIJ compliance, body armor models must meet workmanship and labeling requirements. During compliance testing the manufacturers must register with the program, submit body armor application documents, send armor model samples to an NIJ-approved laboratory, agree to follow up inspection and testing and declare period of ballistic warranty.

At EDI-USA our bullet resistant helmets, bulletproof vests and ballistic shields are tested to NIJ level III-A (ambient) standards in an NIJ-approved laboratory, which means they protect against specific handgun threats and resist up to NIJ 0101.06 level III-A (ambient) ballistic threats.

In simpler terms: our bullet resistant helmets, bulletproof vests and ballistic shields are tested to protect against common handgun rounds (such as 9mm, .40, .357 and .45) including shots up to .44mag rounds; in accordance to NIJ III-A (ambient) specified conditions. Currently, most illegal shooting violence across America occurs from handguns, therefore our products are trusted by so many members of the police and military around the country and the world to keep them safe.

Also, our bullet resistant helmets, bulletproof vests and ballistic shields at EDI-USA go through STANAG 2920 (V50) Ballistic Testing by accredited laboratories, which is an additional ballistic testing standard that is used in the United States and tends to be used more for military applications, such as shrapnel and ammunition fragmentation. Given the importance we place on making sure our products keep users safe, you should only purchase body armor from providers that make sure their equipment is tested and safe.

EDI-USA provides strong bullet resistant tactical gear to police forces, the military and security personnel who understand the need for protection. The bullet resistant helmets, bulletproof vests and ballistic shields we provide offer strong ballistic protection to keep you and your team safe.

We provide our equipment to police & sheriff departments around the United States, individual police and law enforcement officers and to federal military and government agencies via quote and our GSA schedule contract. We also export to over 45+ countries. If you need riot gear or ballistic items, we’ve got you covered.

In an industry where people’s lives depend on the items we provide, EDI-USA takes quality very seriously. On a regular basis, we send our products to laboratories for independent testing, as well as maintain ISO 9001:2015 certification. We trust you to protect us, so why shouldn’t you trust us to protect you?

Riot shields, history, common uses and the best options on the market!

A riot shield is a lightweight protection device, typically deployed by police, security personnel, correctional officers and some military organizations. Riot shields are typically long enough to cover an average-sized person from the top of the head to the knees, though smaller one-handed models may also be used (round – circular – anti-riot shield). They are generally intended to be used in riot control, to protect the user from attacks and threats with blunt or edged weapons and thrown projectiles, or non-lethal weapons such as rubber bullets and water cannons. They can also be used to push back the opposing force. Riot shields have been used as an effective protection tool by the police against protestors and rioters in Europe and the UK as early as the 1960’s and the 1970’s. The British forces deployed them in the 1950’s as well.

Riot shields are used in almost every country with a standardized police force (we offer customized options with languages/fonts and color). Law enforcement often use them in conjunction with a baton (check out our range of batons). Riot shields made for law enforcement are typically constructed from transparent polycarbonate (reinforced plastic) to allow the bearer to have an unobstructed view of incoming thrown objects. However, there are riot shields made from different materials (aluminum / ballistic shields) to help the bearer shield themselves from fire or other dangerous hazards like live ammunition/bullets. riot shields are effective in protecting the bearers and preventing protesters from breaking through police lines (interlocking riot shields).

Common uses of the riot shields:

Riot shields are typically made of transparent polycarbonate between 4–6 millimeters (0.16–0.24 in) in thickness. Shields are designed to be shatter resistant. The riot shield is designed primarily as a defensive weapon, though it can be used in an offensive manner when in direct contact with protesters. We also offer anti-laser riot shields which help the bearer from the threat of laser beams pointed at their eyes and obstructing their vision.

Special event security, tactical police units, corrections officers, crisis response forces, quick reaction forces, disorder control units, and general security contracting companies all use riot shields. Outside of prison cell extractions, riot shields are almost always used for defensive purposes to protect the public in unstable situations. Their clear design gives them an unobstructed line of sight and provides immediate situation assessment.

Riot shields offer protection to the user from a variety of blunt objects and projectiles. Rioters will use anything and everything nearby as a weapon in a riot or melee situation.

Here’s a list of items rioters use that the riot shields can protect you and your team from:

Rocks

Glass

Small metal fragments

Electric shock

Bricks

Stick attacks

Rubber bullets

Ballistic shields can protect you and your team from:

Fire thrown objects – (Molotov cocktails)

Arrows

Live ammunition/bullets

ANTI-LASER RIOT SHIELD

One of the biggest problems that law enforcement faces today is the threat of lasers being pointed into eyes during operations, and temporarily blinding or distracting the officer from their mission.

ExecDefense’s EDI-USA Anti-Laser Riot Shield was developed to prevent officers from being blinded or distracted by primary nuisance lasers.

Manufactured with strong anti-impact polycarbonate 0.16” in thickness, this shield includes propriety anti-laser film which is permanently imbedded into the riot shield to help minimize and block the affects of lasers. The shield has a VLT of 30% and blocks up to 200 – 560mm of blue and green lasers.

What makes this shield different than other anti-laser devices, is that the anti-laser film is permanently manufactured within the polycarbonate formula of the shield – don’t worry about it falling off, or not completely covering all parts of the shield, because it’s imbedded fully throughout the entire riot shield.

The user-facing side (back side) of the shield features a strong a 1-arm strap and 1-arm handle system.

Customized inscriptions available for front side.

The shield is manufactured with black aluminum and includes a small viewport (multiple eyeholes) with a layer of polycarbonate (transparent).

Lasers: The New Threat To Law Enforcement & How To Stop Them

Security personnel are always on their toes. Now, law enforcement and other first responders are facing a new threat: handheld lasers blinding the eyes of officers during their operations.

What are handheld lasers?

Handheld lasers are electronic devices that are easily bought in many stores, as well as online. The lasers are usually small and will emit a bright laser shining light when a button is pressed by the combatant. Most lasers currently used to distract and blind police are primary nuisance blue and green color, and they can run on batteries to last for a very long time without needing to be replaced or recharged.

Due to the small, yet powerful, size of the laser devices, they can easily be concealed or discarded by perpetrators very quickly. Perpetrators will shine then and they will go through the visors of officers’ riot helmets or riot shields.

What harm are handheld lasers causing to police and other law enforcement workers?

During security operations, combatants point powerful handheld lasers into the eyes of police officers through the visors of their riot helmets, which have many harmful affects. Such adverse affects include:

– Temporary blindness so that the officer cannot see the operational security situation they are working in during the time of laser emittance.
– Becoming severely distracted so that combatants can harm the officer, or harm the officer’s teammates or other innocent bystanders.
– Distracting the officer in order to commit criminal acts in the operational situation.
– Cause short and long-term health affects not only to the officer’s eyes, but also other parts of his or her body, as well as mental trauma.

How do officers stay safe from handheld lasers?

That’s a good question, and it’s a tough one.

Currently there are very few solutions on the market which will protect officers from combatants with handheld lasers. Since most riot helmets and riot shields are clear, lasers can be shined right into the eyes of officers without any protection.

To help protect officers, EDI-USA provides anti-laser strips that help deflect handheld lasers. Manufactured with durable PVC material, these anti-laser strips protect up to 200-540nm of primary nuisance blue and green lasers. Currently, most handheld lasers emit a frequency of 532nm, so these strips will help keep officers safe for the majority oflasers currently being shined into officers eyes under 540mm.

How do the anti-laser strips work?

Simply take the strip out of its packaging and apply it to the visor of the riot helmet or riot visor that attaches onto a ballistic helmet. The strip will stick automatically and can be removed (without leaving any sticky adhesive residue). Larger anti-laser strips are also available to apply to riot shields, and strips can be produced in custom sizes for specific operations. These anti-laser strips are literally helping save officers around the country during very dangerous situations.

Our department needs anti-laser strips ASAP. How do we get them?

Very limited stocks of anti-laser strips are available that are being held for law enforcement and security personnel use ONLY.

To order anti-laser strips for your department, call EDI-USA at 215-235-4300 or contact us via email at info@ExecDefense.com . Our engineering department can also help customize the strips to fit on your riot shields, gas masks, or even car windows.

For additional information on the anti-laser strips provided by EDI-USA, please call 215-235-4300 or contact us for more information. Mention you are interested in ordering anti-laser strips.

The best way to stay warm outside during the cold months!

As the days grow colder, our hardworking law enforcement, security and first responder professionals are having to work outside in increasingly cold conditions. Especially in certain areas of the United States like the Northeast or the Midwest, the freeze setting in can be bone-chilling. To help you and your team stay warm and safe, EDI-USA has put together the following list of the best tactical gear for winter weather.

What tactical gear is good to wear in the cold?

The PROTEC-X Riot Helmet

The PROTEC-X Riot Helmet has thermal padding inside. Its fit is usually roomy enough to wear a balaclava underneath to keep the user warm when stationed outside for a long time. The strong face shield also helps prevent cold wind from blowing into user’s face.

The PASGT Ballistic (III-A) Helmet with visor

The PASGT Ballistic (III-A) Helmet offers similar benefits for when user is outside. One of EDI’s riot visors can be fitted over the PAGST helmet, which will help stop cold wind from blowing into user’s face. EDI’s riot visor also has a liquid seal onto that helps reduce wind chill on the user.

The TURBO-X Riot Suit

Turbo-X Riot Suit

With EDI’s TURBO-X Riot Suit, the user can wear thermal clothes underneath. EDI provides full gloves (with hard knuckles) for users to wear during long outdoor operations, keeping their hands warm while offering an additional layer of tactical protection. Additionally, shin guards and upper leg protection on the suit that are worn over a typical police uniform that also provides warmth for the user.

Have your tactical trade shows / police conferences been canceled? How to stay up-to-date with your gear!

Over the past several months, COVID-19 has caused many law enforcement industry trade shows to be canceled or held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Within the United States, this includes some of the industry’s foremost events, including:

Across the country, law enforcement departments rely on these conferences to share and collaborate on best practices for their operations. Departments also use these events to search for updated gear ideas, in order to provide their officers with the most up-to-date tactical and protective equipment.

While in-person industry events will have to be postponed for now, EDI-USA’s team has been working hard to create new forums for our clients to learn about the latest gear. Our goal is to make it easy for your department to stay up-to-date on the latest protective and tactical equipment available to keep you safe.

For that reason, EDI-USA has been expanding our offerings for you to stay up-to-date with the newest gear and share best practices despite not being able to attend in-person industry conferences or events. We’ve been expanding our online presence via digital media on our Facebook Page, and you can connect with EDI-USA on LinkedIn as well.

We’ve also been noticing an uptick in online and phone inquiries. In order to facilitate the increase in demand without increasing client wait times, we’ve been investing in increasing our virtual customer support options. When you have questions, you can access EDI-USA’s virtual customer support by visiting the Customer Support page on our website.

Additionally, some of our clients are experiencing an increased need for tactical gear that doubles as equipment to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. For that reason, we recommend the following products:

The Protec-X Riot Helmet

This helmet has a 4mm polycarbonate visor on the front to prevent fluids from entering a user’s face.

We have also seen other users who are looking to add face shields onto their existing tactical or protective equipment. The following products from EDI-USA offer this customization:

FAST High-Cut Ballistic helmet (III-A)

Designed for high-tactical operations, EDI’s FAST High-Cut Helmet allows users to protect themselves while also being able to attach radio communication and night vision devices to the helmet. You can now attach an additional face or riot shield in the side rails as well. You can learn more about this helmet here.

Ballistic and non-ballistic visors can also be attached into our other ballistic helmets, including EDI’s MICH Helmet (III-A) and the PASGT Helmet (III-A)

As you can see, even though trade shows have been cancelled or moved to virtual trade shows, your team at EDI-USA is still working hard to help get users what they need. And while we hope that next year trade shows will return in full swing, the EDI-USA team is always ready to help law enforcement maximize their safety and preparedness in operations.

8 tips to help YOU choose the right RIOT HELMET size

Are you ready to find the perfect fit RIOT HELMET? In today’s environment, it is important to be protected, but it is even MORE important to make sure you and your team’s protective gear fits correctly. Protective garments that do not fit correctly can expose users to risks, as well as be uncomfortable for long operations. Check out some tips below to make sure you choose the right sized riot helmets for you and your team.

1. Determine who will be the users of the riot helmets.

Are you buying a riot helmet just for yourself, or for your whole team? It’s important to know exactly who will be using the riot helmet in order to size them correctly. Questions such as height, head size, gender, and body stature are all important when determining the users of a specific riot helmet.

Does your team usually switch out riot helmets frequently? If so, a one-size-fits-all helmet helmet like EDI’s TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet may be a good option. But if your team keeps helmets individually and has a diverse head size then a multi-size helmet such as EDI’s PROTEC-X Riot Helmet may be the best option.

EDI’s tactical specialists are happy to discuss this with you and make suggestions about sizing. Contact us for advising today.

2. Pinpoint where and how the riot helmet will be used.

Is your primary operation in street riots? Are you regularly deployed to contain prison riots? Will your riot helmet be used for barrier guarding operations (BGOs)? It is important to determine in which environments your riot helmets may be used in order to choose the right size.

Some helmets like EDI’s TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet are designed with a steel face cage primarily for prison extraction operations and are meant to be very tight. On the other hand, EDI’s Bubble Riot Helmet is designed for gas mask use for street protest operations and should fit a bit roomier. Make sure to discuss with your riot helmet provider before placing an order of helmets to make sure they can be used well in the desired applications.

3. Determine how frequently you will use your riot helmet.

Some departments, need to dress up in their riot gear every week (or day), whereas other departments may only need to use their riot gear once or twice a year. If you’ll be putting on and taking off your riot helmet on a daily basis, you may want to choose a helmet that has a more universal fit such as EDI’s Mini Bubble Riot Helmet or TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet.

Additionally, if you are using a riot helmet along with a riot suit, such as EDI’s universal fit TURBO-X Riot Suit, then you may want to also opt for a universal fit riot helmet.

4. Will you keep your riot helmet if you switch positions?

What will happen to your riot helmet if you switch positions within your department and you no longer need to use it? For smaller departments with limited budgets or grant funding the riot helmet may need to be re-used. In situations like this, it’s important to keep in mind whether a multi-size helmet such as EDI’s PROTEC-X Riot Helmet should be ordered, or if a universal sized riot helmet may be a better long-term option for your department.

EDI Terminator-X Riot Helmet
The EDI TERMINATOR-X Riot Helmet

5. What is the climate where the riot helmet will be used?

Less of a question pertaining to sizing, but an important topic nonetheless. Does your riot helmet offer anti-fog treatment on the visor such as EDI’s PROTEC-X Riot Helmet? Does it have proper ventilation holes on the back? Will you be wearing a thermal balaclava underneath the riot helmet?

All of these question should be carefully considered before choosing the riot helmet model that fits you best. EDI’s tactical specialists are here to help discuss this with you via email or phone.

6. What happens when you receive a riot helmet, and it doesn’t fit someone on your team (or yourself)?

No need to panic. There are many options to resolve a loose, or tight, helmet. Firstly, if the helmet is too loose, you can try adjusting the inner chin strap to make it tighter. All of EDI’s Riot Helmets are equipped with strong non-rust buckles and durable nylon suspension straps in order to adjust the helmet to the user’s head.

If the helmet is too tight, try also adjusting the straps to be looser, or even removing the rubber chin cup all together.

You can always call or email an EDI tactical specialist to discuss sizing and see what can be done to ensure that the correct helmet can fit the correct user.

7. Request a T&E (testing and evaluation) sample.

Any reputable riot gear / riot helmet supplier should always have a set-aside stock of samples to send out to departments to try and test out. This is the best option to try on a riot helmet for you and your team before making a department-wide purchase.

EDI proudly provides T&E samples to departments across the United States and internationally in order to make sure police departments are 100% confident in their sizing decisions before placing an order.

8. When should I start thinking about procuring riot helmets for my department and thinking about sizing?

In today’s environment riot gear providers are working overtime to help make sure security personnel can stay protected in all environments – whether in cities, rural environments, correctional centers, parks, sporting events, and many other situations.

It’s important not to delay critical equipment purchases such as riot helmetsriot shields, or riot suits; or even ballistic gear such as ballistic helmets and ballistic shields. If budget is a challenge, then contact your riot gear provider to learn about programs and grants that can assist you in getting the gear your team deserves.

EDI’s specialists are happy to guide you to a list of grants which have helped many departments previously. Please contact us today, and one of our tactical specialists will get back to you immediately.

And please, STAY SAFE.

Are You Prepared for an Active Shooter?

Part of EDI-USA’s Series: Are YOU Prepared For…?

An Active Shooter emergency is one that occurs unpredictably, evolves quickly, and is over within minutes or hours. That means time is of the essence when it comes to making a difference in the outcome and saving lives. Your team will want to neutralize the shooter as soon as possible, all while evacuating and protecting bystanders in as safe, orderly, and effective a manner as possible.

Whether responding to an Active Shooter emergency in the workplace, a school, a shopping center, or any other confined and populated area where an active shooter is targeting civilians, EDI’s equipment can help your team save lives, maximize their protection, and carry the day.

Is your agency prepared for an active shooter threat?

Responding to an active shooter incident is a tremendous responsibility for security and law enforcement. It requires careful planning, discipline, and sense of duty. With foresight and preparation, you can maximize your agency’s ability to nimbly respond to an active shooter situation, saving lives and taking control of the situation as quickly as possible.

In recent years, many law enforcement organizations have evolved to offer Active Shooter Trainings. Some of these trainings offer a collaborative approach, drawing on insights and post-hoc analyses run by other police and security agencies that have confronted an active shooter situation. This research, and the collective pool of information and strategies, can be a life-saving resource for other agencies looking to hone their own strategies and preparedness.

Developing a Tactical Playbook

When it comes to responding to an active shooter threat, it’s important for you team to put together a playbook in advance. The playbook will acquaint everyone on your team with the strategies you may draw on to respond to an active shooter situation. Running through these drills will help your team practice working together as a unit, and familiarize each team member with the roles they may play, depending on the circumstances and their positioning.

Since the 1999 Columbine Shooting, police teams no longer wait for SWAT teams to arrive before confronting an active shooter. Borrowing tactics from infantry patrols and hostage rescue teams, police and security teams have had their roles expand into confronting active shooters.

Since the tactics required to effectively neutralize an active shooter are drawn from a military approach, EDI’s ballistic gear can be a lifesaving asset for your team. Our lightweight, well-built gear is designed to facilitate movement, giving your officers the protection while facilitating their operations. Key products EDI recommends for all teams preparing for an active shooter situation include:

THE FAST HIGH-CUT HELMET (III-A)

Designed for high-tactical operations, EDI’s FAST High-Cut Helmet allows users to protect themselves while also being able to attach radio communication and night vision devices to the helmet. Tough, strong, and amazing – this helmet provides it all.

HANDCUFFS, LEGCUFFS, AND RESTRAINTS

When you’ve taken an active shooter into custody, given the tension of the moment and the publicity the event will generate, it’s important to maintain control over the assailant and make transit to a holding cell run as quickly as possible. EDI’s handcuffs, leg restraints, and transportation systems protect your officers while giving them the tools they need to assert control over the situation.

Active Shooter Preparedness Plans in Your Community

Given the world we live in, it’s important for police departments and security agencies in the United States to coordinate with local businesses, school districts, and other agencies to put active shooter preparedness plans in place. Active shooter strikes occur randomly, and making sure local leaders know the drill can give peace of mind and help save lives.

When helping local commercial centers and school district officials make their active shooter preparedness plans, some important things to cover are:

  • Identifying escape routes, and making sure staff members know how to access them and what paths to follow
  • The importance of leaving all belongings behind
  • Strategies for sheltering-in-place
  • How to respond when police arrive

Staying Safe and Staying Prepared

Since active shooter strikes occur randomly and without warning, it is important to keep your team’s skills and equipment up-to-date. Regularly run through the drills in your Tactical Playbook with your team. Check in with your community leaders about their efforts to spread the word about their Active Shooter Preparedness Plans within their places of business, schools, and other places where the public congregates.

It is also critically important that you properly maintain the gear your officers may need in the case of an active shooting. Each of EDI’s products comes with comprehensive information on how to properly clean and store your gear. To make sure all gear remains in a condition ready for tactical operations, it’s important to assign a team member to regularly check over the gear, to make sure everything is ready and in place. EDI recommends running these gear checks monthly, as part of a routine active shooter preparedness check-in.

The Final Word

The ability to respond effectively to an active shooter requires complex advance preparation. You will need to work with your team to develop a tactical playbook, invest in the right gear, and coordinate with community leaders and local stakeholders to ensure schools, public areas, and places of business near you have credible plans in place for an active shooter situation.

Together, these strategies will ensure that your officers are trained and confident, and that the groundwork has been laid to maximize the effectiveness of your team’s response to an active shooter situation.

EDI salutes your hard work, and from our team to yours, offer a heartfelt thanks to the serving men and women who put their lives on the line to keep the public safe.

EDI Wraps Up 2019 Strong Displaying at Record Number of Police Shows

With the launch of EDI’s new TURBO-X Riot Suit and several new Riot Helmets and Ballistic Helmets, EDI focused heavily during 2019 demonstrating our new police technologies to law enforcement around the United States. EDI’s team of sales and tactical experts traveled the United States to exhibit at several trade shows this year, demonstrating the latest anti-riot technologies to law enforcement officers across the USA.

Here are some of the tradeshows we hit this year, and industry insights we gleaned for police, law enforcement and corrections officers:

The EDI booth at this year’s IACP conference in Chicago, one of the most important industry events of the year.

Texas Tactical Police Officers Association Conference (Austin – March 2019)

We kicked off the 2019 trade show circuit in Austin, Texas, joining the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association (TTPOA) for their annual conference. The TTPOA conference gave us a chance to collaborate directly with police officers assigned to SWAT teams. We received feedback from officers in the field and identified areas where future EDI innovations could help address their needs. We also had the chance to demonstrate how EDI’s tactical gear can best assist tactical officers, tactical teams, and the operations they conduct.

ILEETA Training Conference (St Louis – March 2019)

The International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association is a hub for those who offer specialized training on officer survival, use of force, defensive tactics, and use of firearms to law enforcement professionals. The officers at this conference were particularly interested in EDI’s innovative handcuff and leg restraint systems, as well as our duty apparel and tactical accessories.

Ohio Tactical Officers Association Conference (Cleveland – April 2019)

The Ohio Tactical Officers Association (OTOA) celebrates the spirit of excellence exhibited by tactical police conducting tactical operations in the Midwest. EDI joined 1500+ conference attendees to peruse the latest in tactical gear. At this conference, EDI’s durable, lightweight duty batons were a big hit.

American Correctional Association Expo (Boston – August 2019)

The American Correctional Association Expo gave EDI the chance to interface directly with corrections officers from across the United States. Having specialized in corrections operations across Central America for the past several years, the EDI team is excited to bring our expertise home to the United States. We were impressed by the hardworking spirit, sense of duty, and attention to detail of the serving men and women, who expressed particular interest in our transport legcuffs and our combination handcuff + legcuff prisoner transport systems.

Each EDI booth is a chance for field officers to come try on and get to know EDI’s products. It’s also a chance for them to tell us what their needs are, so EDI can develop innovative new solutions to meet their needs.

National Tactical Officers Association Conference (Orlando – August 2019)

This conference brings together the leading innovators and footsoldiers of tactical operations across the USA. Because of the need for lightweight, agile equipment that permits nimble movement, EDI’s tactical ballistic vests and FAST high-cut helmets were of particular interest to conference attendees.

Tactical Operations Conference East (Washington DC – September 2019)

This conference gave EDI a chance to get to know police, corrections and law enforcement officials from up and down the Eastern Coast. As EDI is headquartered in Philadelphia, our team was particularly excited to speak with officers in our nearby Jersey, Delaware and Maryland neighborhood, not to mention our serving men and women from across Philadelphia. We also got a chance to see what other innovators and suppliers are doing in our area. At this conference, products of particular interest to officers included our gas masks, ballistic helmets, and ballistic vests.

International Association of Chiefs of Police (Chicago – October 2019)

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference is one of the most important industry events of the year. Its forums shape the agenda in the field for the next year. Since the IACP conference attracts attendees from around the world, for EDI it’s always a busy week, since it’s a chance to catch up and collaborate with our partners and clients from across the USA and around the world. This year, the rise of protests around the world was a particular focus of discussion, and attention focused on EDI’s riot helmets, riot suits, riot shields, gas masks and tactical accessories to help protect serving men and women around the world.
